JAZZ AT THE HOPKINS CLUB
Featuring Gary Thomas’ Pariah’s Pariahs
Two Sets: 8:30–9:30 and 10:00–11:00 pm
As well as artistic director of Jazz at the Johns Hopkins Club, Gary Thomas
has served as Richard and Elizabeth Case Director and Chair of Jazz Studies
at Peabody since the department’s founding, crafting and molding the program
entirely from scratch. One of the most innovative saxophonists of
our time, Gary has inspired innovation at Peabody, uniting artists of varied
backgrounds, through excellence and scholarship. Through his leadership,
his colleagues and students share in a rich and progressive musical language.
Pariah’s Pariahs serves as a culmination of this work, presenting a group that
features Peabody faculty, alumni, and current students with a striking sense
of accord and mutual vision.
This concert marks a rare occasion to present outside the institute, a group
spanning so many years, departments and levels at Peabody. For Gary, having
released two of what DownBeat Magazine named “Best Recordings of
the 1990’s”, it also marks a return to recording as a leader, after a hiatus to
focus on developing the jazz program at Peabody. Recorded live on April
23, 2016 at the Johns Hopkins Club, we are proud to present the much anticipated
CD release of Pariah’s Pariahs.
Reservations required. Cost: $25 Adults, $15 Students per set.
